Brazil: Now Is the Time
Marina's mother accepted a
Scripture booklet in the marketplace and took it home to her crippled
daughter. Now, 21 years later, though still unable to walk, Marina counts her
blessings and says, "Oh, how good God was in bringing the gospel to
my home!" It was through the printed gospel message that Marina
came to accept Christ as Savior. God has been at work in Brazil for years!
When WMP plans for shipments to Brazil, it is a BIG
project. This fifth largest country in the world, with 172 million people and
almost half the total land area of South America, presents vast opportunities
and challenges for the spread of the gospel. Approximately 82 percent of the
population lives in cities, providing for concentrated evangelism. But among
these city dwellers, 40 million survive in the "favelas" or urban slums,
including 13 million children living without sufficient care or food.
Many find the only means of survival through crime.
Along the mighty Amazon River in northern Brazil, there are
villages that can only be reached by boat and precious souls who have
never heard of Jesus. From the vast Amazon Basin in the north to the
mega cities of Rio de Janeiro and
São
Paulo in the south, the gospel is being
heard and received. One report says that Brazilian Christians are one
of the fastest growing forces in Latin American missions, sending out
a substantial number of missionaries throughout the world.
WMP has many faithful distributors in
Brazil, including national coordinator Erno Engelsdorf, who eagerly await the
next supply
of Scripture booklets. When Jay Benson and Harold Mack last
visited Brazil, they heard many reports of how the booklets had been dispersed
and what the Lord is doing in hearts
through the power of His Word. Other
reports continue to arrive by mail:
"After I was baptized, I had to share the gospel with
others. I have made four trips to the north of Brazil, and since I began
receiving booklets from [WMP], I've made four trips to the Amazon region. It
is a very poor area. Every trip I've made, there were 200-210 people who
accepted Christ. Every trip I take, I include 50,000 [WMP] booklets."
---P.J.S.
"I have a son who is in prison. When I went to visit
him, I saw the door open to sharing Christ. Every time I go
to visit my son, I take booklets and have a service at the prison. Many
prisoners (50-60) come to hear about Christ and receive booklets. And when
family members come to visit the prisoners, they ask for booklets to
take home to give to other members of the family. I have just a small
problem now - I'm out of booklets. I have a 'debt' of over 20,000
booklets that I've promised to give to different prisons. There are over 50
members of my church ready to work with me in the prisons." ---P.C.M.
"I have been a pastor for 10 years. Before that, I was a
robber and in prison. I accepted Christ in prison. When I was in prison, I
came to know the booklet, Who Am I That A King Would Die in My Place?
I loved this booklet so much. I asked someone in prison to read the booklet
for me. He read to me, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes
unto the Father but by me.' When I got out of prison, I used this material
in my evangelism work. I distributed booklets in prisons, police departments,
hospitals, and on the streets. When I go on the buses, I say to the people, 'Before,
I was a robber and got on buses to steal; now I am here to give you something
good.' Many of the people who ride the buses to work have accepted
Christ." ---P.S.
"The work you are doing is very important for us.
When we leave the hospitals, we know we have left part of the Word of God so
the patients have something to read." ---M.A.B.

Brother Clovis Nogueira of São Paulo is an ardent
distributor who has been using WMP booklets for many years. He writes,
"Dear brothers, we are desperate because we have no
literature and the job of evangelism has been stopped. Brothers, we
cannot stop with evangelism because thousands of souls are dying."
A young woman from central Indiana recently
visited WMP and shared the burden she and her family have for the area of
Obidos, Para, Brazil. They had heard that WMP had literature for Brazil and
came to see how to obtain booklets once they reached the field. They will be
working with local pastors who have no material to share with their people or
to use for evangelism.
To help meet the vast needs in Brazil, WMP is preparing three
40-ft. containers with 12,626 boxes of booklets, including 2,040,000
copies of The Way to God in Portuguese. These booklets are urgently
needed to encourage and train Christian leaders as well as reach those whose
hearts are heavy with hopelessness and fear. As WMP's coordinator Erno
Engelsdorf has shared, now is the best time to reach Brazil with the gospel.
[You can help reach people in Brazil. A $20 gift
provides 500 Scripture booklets; $100 provides 2,500 booklets; and $500
reaches 12,500 precious people of Brazil.]
A Double Blessing for Nicaragua
WMP recently provided Scripture
booklets and Bible study books for two ministry outreaches in Nicaragua. Each
one expressed their gratitude for the material and praise to God for what He
is doing in this land.
The Way of the Cross Ministries received
over 870,000 Scripture booklets in Spanish as well as more than 200,000 copies
of A Bible Study on John for a major outreach in seven specific areas
of Nicaragua. Teams from the USA joined with Nicaraguan pastors for a one-week
evangelistic thrust into the countryside. God touched hearts and a reported 125,175
people accepted Jesus Christ as Savior.
"What a great blessing World Missionary Press is to the
nation of Nicaragua! We have handed out thousands upon thousands of Scripture
booklets throughout the whole nation, as well as [Bible studies on] John to
all who received Jesus. We have shared extra Scripture booklets with
more than 1,000 pastors and spiritual leaders of the nation of
Nicaragua. It was such a blessing to see their desire for literature. I
watched the school children read everything so intently, especially A
Bible Study on John. I would really encourage all [who are involved in]
WMP. The work you do for the Lord is tremendous. You will never know the great
blessing it is for the kingdom until you go to be with Jesus. Thank you so
much."
---Ben Butler, Director
Way of the Cross Ministries
Steve Bakos of the Messiah
Project in Managua, Nicaragua, requested 1,416 boxes of Spanish
literature as well as 600 boxes of
The Way to God and Help from
Above in the Miskito language.
"All I can say is God's timing was perfect
once again. I say that not only because we have handed out all of the first
shipment you sent, but also because this shipment arrived on the heels of a
40-ft. container of rice donated for the starving Miskito Indians on the Rio
Coco. We were in the process of getting the 40,000 lbs. of rice cleared
through customs when your container of literature arrived.
"I stood in awe of God as my mind went back to the first
distribution of booklets in the Miskito language. The Lord had given a village
2,000 lbs. of bean seed, and your booklets arrived just in time to be handed
out with this blessing. Now the Lord has multiplied that, and this week we
will begin distributing 30 lbs. of rice per family to more than 1,200 hungry
families in all 12 villages of the lower river. With this new shipment, every
person in those villages will receive copies of both booklets in Miskito.
We will not only be preaching of the Lord's mercy and compassion, but we
will also be showing it as well. Thank you so much for this wonderful gift of
God's Word."
[You can
invest in the lives of people in Nicaragua through a gift of $25 to reach 625
people, or a gift of $50 to reach 1,250 people. A $1,000 investment would
touch 25,000 people with the gospel.]
