In West Africa:

Overcoming by the Power of the Word

" I read The Way to God, and now I am really changed. In the past, before I bumped into this booklet, I had a problem choosing the correct way to God. . . .  I really thank you for showing me the way to eternal life.”  —R.K, Malawi

Among the nations of West Africa, the spread of the gospel has moved at varying paces. Some nations have experienced significant spiritual progress, while others have seen only a small spiritual harvest. In the nation of Burkina Faso the Spirit of God is moving, and World Missionary Press Scripture booklets in French are helping to reap a significant harvest.  (Photo caption) A pastor, his family, and friends express gratitude for boxes sent to them in Burkina Faso.

WMP distributor Franklin Spotts of Francophone Ministries for Christ has been using WMP booklets for 15 years. He notes that the advance of the gospel in the 26 French-speaking countries of Africa has been difficult, often due to Muslim influence. When the doors opened in Burkina Faso (1988) and in Mali (1991), his mission began meeting with Christians to help evangelize those countries. He considers WMP booklets to be the best literature for introducing the gospel. In one door-to-door village distribution in Burkina Faso, more than 300 souls came to Christ. Booklets are also used by medical teams that minister to physical needs.

A prayer guide published in 1999 stated, “Without the intervention of God, there is little hope for Burkina Faso.” Several years later, Franklin Spotts reported that while 90 percent of the northern part of the country is Muslim, the gospel is reaching hearts in the southern parts. Outside of the large cities, where one must be “careful” in sharing the gospel, the villages are open. Franklin says he likes to use the booklets How to Know God and The Power of God when working among Muslim people.  In Islam Allah is a God of power, not a God of love. The Scripture booklets show that the one true God of the Bible is the omnipotent God and the God of love.

Benin has been called the least-evangelized non-Muslim country in sub-Saharan Africa, with the highest percentage of the population being followers of traditional religions similar to voodoo. A distributor from Benin wrote, “The parcel you sent us arrived in January. This indeed was a very big encouragement to us. By the grace of God we are continuing house-to-house evangelism. We need your constant prayer support that God will prosper our work in Benin Republic. There are certain things setting us back, but we know that our God is bigger than them all.” —C.O., Benin

An African mission in Ghana has sent missionaries into Togo to work among the Ewe people. In their report they note that frequently the elders and fetish priests go back to Benin to increase their power. Cults and strong communal bonds bind the people to animism and tribal practices. Defiance has its punishments and sanctions in terms of neglect, family rejection, and disregard. In such an environment, trusting in Christ is like opting for open confrontation. And such has been the fate of many believers. In this region where immorality, poverty, and despair reign, a cry rings out, “Is there any hope for us?”

WMP distributors in the nations of West Africa are taking the message of hope to places where sources of hope are limited. Regular shipments go to distributors in Cameroon, Benin, Togo, Central African Republic, Congo, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Niger. Although Côte d’Ivoire is now closed to missionaries, many distributors there are still sharing the love of Christ. A distributor in Togo requested booklets in French for use in Togo, Benin, and Niger to work primarily in Muslim areas.

Another distributor from Cameroon wrote, “It is with great pleasure that we received the consignment of materials shipped to us. It was wonderful when we finally picked them up, and they are already strongly [being used] for distribution in churches, in other public places, and in different towns and cities in Cameroon. Some have even made their way to Northern Nigeria, taken by missionaries working there. As soon as they get finished, we will place another order. No amount of booklets is too much for us and no amount is too small.”  —A.A. Cameroon

WMP produces six topical 48-page Scripture booklets in French as well as A Bible Study on John and salvation coloring book He Is Risen! French New Testaments will be reprinted soon, as the Lord provides the funding. The power of the Word of God can overcome any obstacle.
[You can help provide Scripture booklets for West Africa. A gift of $20 will provide 500 Scripture booklets; $100 will reach 2,500 people. A $500 contribution will touch 12,500 people with God’s hope and love.]

Special Shipment for Paraguay
For many years distributor Aquilla R. has been using World Missionary Press Scripture booklets in Paraguay. Working in the region of Asunción, the capital, he has used thousands of Spanish booklets. A skid of 240 boxes of booklets was recently sent to restock his supply. Although Brother R. is getting older, he is still eager to be about the Father’s business, reaching souls for the kingdom.
