A Harvest of Souls in Nicaragua

“After years of searching for the truth, I found it after reading the Help From Above booklet that was left by someone at my sister’s store. . . . I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. . . . After my husband died, I decided to serve the Lord for the remaining years of my life. I have a Bible ministry in memory of my husband. Thank you for sending me Help From Above booklets. Whoever I share one with loves it.” —L.P.

Again and again World Missionary Press receives testimony of hungry, aching hearts responding in faith to the message of salvation found in the Scripture booklets. As God prepares hearts to hear His Word, He also prepares for the message to be delivered. One place where God’s plan is being demonstrated is in Nicaragua.

For over three years The Way of the Cross Ministries (WOTC) has labored among the people of Nicaragua, giving aid, preaching the Gospel, and encouraging pastors. Ben Butler of WOTC reports the beginning of a great harvest of souls and fields that are “unbelievably ripe.”  On a recent trip there to plan for a major evangelistic campaign in April 2005, WOTC workers found churches alive, souls being saved, new churches being established, and pastors with a tremendous burden for the lost. Joy and praise to the Lord echoed throughout meetings with pastors and staff.

Much of the seed for this harvest was planted during a campaign in August 2004. The WOTC team was joined by 126 Nicaraguan pastors. Opportunities to preach and share the gospel abounded. School teachers and leaders begged them to come and speak to their students. In a country where 80 percent of the population is under 18, this was a wonderful opening to impact a new generation with the gospel. During that campaign 26,000 people accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. Over two-thirds of the students who heard the gospel responded.

WMP materials have been an important part of the “seed sowing” in Nicaragua. Along with beans and rice, 500 boxes of Scripture booklets in Spanish were distributed among hundreds of families. A Bible Study on John and Spanish New Testaments were used for follow-up with the 26,000 people who responded to the gospel. Ben Butler commented that they were “wearing out” those who give out the follow-up material because the harvest was so great.
